Devastated Human Lives #1: The killing mining practices

Thousands of people around the globe suffer from exploitation of their lands by mining companies. The tendency is that the companies promise responsible and sustainable operations and management, but the reality is that after them only ghost towns are left.

Carmen Ugarte – activist and citizen of Oyon, Peru, is telling her personal story about the consequences over people and nature of the mining practices in her region. The mining companies that are operating in Oyon are ‘Buenaventura’ from Peru, ‘Los Quenales’ (Glencore), and mining company ‘Raura’. These companies are polluting the rivers and lakes in the region, kill the nature biodiversity, animals and plants, and people’s food.

Carmen has her own alternative solutions how to live in such a dead land.

The movie was shot in Bulgaria while field visitation and knowledge exchange among activists and citizens from affected areas of related international companies, organized by ZaZemiata – Friends of the Earth, Bulgaria. Most of the pictures are from Krumovgrad where a new mine is just about to be opened.

Carmen Ugarte is part of ‘La Confederación Nacional de Comunidades del Perú Afectadas por la Minería’ CONACAMI) in Peru.
